Recent weeks have brought another serious migration crisis, linked to the situation in Afghanistan. Many statements on the subject are being made in the media and in public life, representing almost the full spectrum of attitudes towards refugees.
The language used by politicians, activists, religious leaders and other participants in the debate can reveal their attitude to the issue of migration and to migrants themselves.
Who does the word “neighbour” apply to? How does the word “refugee” sound when spoken by people who profess a religious faith? Does the language religious leaders use to speak and write about the migration crisis express care, compassion and love – or fear, hostility and indifference?
