🟦 In mid-December, “dream homes” drawn by children from Belarus went on display in the Debate space at Passage of Dialogue (Przejście Dialogu). Each drawing is paired with the wording of a fundamental right from the Convention on the Rights of the Child or the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights.
🟦 The idea for the exhibition grew out of a need to give a voice to one of the most discriminated-against groups in society – children. Children’s needs and boundaries are often patronised and dismissed as unimportant. A prime example is the climate activist Greta Thunberg, who has repeatedly faced contemptuous comments belittling her activism and the substance of what she says.
🟦 The quotations used in the exhibition graphics come from the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights.
Let us remember that children’s rights are, after all, human rights! Every person, regardless of origin, beliefs, age or gender, has the same basic needs and rights. That is why the exhibition’s message is universal and can be applied in many contexts – from children’s rights to tackling prejudice against people from minorities or other cultures.
Let us see the child – and every other person who is no longer a child.
We would like to thank the “Za wolność naszą i waszą” (For Our Freedom and Yours) Foundation, which supports the Belarusian community in Wrocław, for the idea. We thank the young artists for their beautiful drawings, and our colleague from the Passage of Dialogue team, Amelia.
