For years, independent Belarusian culture has found a space in Wrocław where it can be expressed freely. At the Passage of Dialogue (Przejście Dialogu) we support artists who, through literature, theatre, music and the visual arts, show the diversity of contemporary Belarus and the power of dialogue.
This year’s 13th Festival of Independent Belarusian Culture “JESTEM!” (I AM!) – organised by the “Za Wolność Waszą i Naszą” (For Your Freedom and Ours) Foundation – will take place on 14–19 October 2025. This edition’s motto is a manifesto of visibility and dignity – an expression of the need to be heard, whatever the place or circumstances. The festival will bring together artists from many fields: from literature and theatre, through music, to the visual arts and photography. More information about the festival programme and the latest event announcements can be found on the organiser’s social media – click here to see the full festival schedule.
We are delighted to announce that the Wrocław Centre for Social Development (WCRS) – Passage of Dialogue – is once again part of the festival this year and will host two events.
Dramas of a turning point. A meeting around the book “Niekończący się sierpień” (The Endless August). Combined with the presentation of the Award for the Support and Development of Belarusian Culture.
15 October (Wednesday), 18:00
Five years after the events that shook Belarus in the summer of 2020 and moved people all over the world, we invite you to a special meeting that opens up a space for conversation, reflection and community. Its starting point will be the launch of The Endless August – the first anthology published in Poland of six contemporary Belarusian plays, which bear witness to social change, courage and the hope born in the shadow of dramatic experiences. It is a unique opportunity to see contemporary Belarus through the eyes of its playwrights.
The evening will feature a performative reading of an excerpt from one of the plays in the book and a conversation with the volume’s editor and the originator of the project, Henryk Mazurkiewicz, as well as invited guests – artists and people involved in independent Belarusian culture. Together we will look for answers to the questions of how theatre and literature can document turning points, what August 2020 remains in our memory, and what language we need to talk about trauma, solidarity and responsibility. As an added bonus, active participants will have the chance to receive a free copy of the book.
“Jestem w każdym wzorze” (I Am in Every Pattern) – a workshop for children and adults
18 October (Saturday), 11:00–14:00
Registration required — click here to register.
Paper cutting (wycinanki) is an age-old art that unites nations through beauty and creativity. Belarusians, Ukrainians, Poles — in different countries people have cut patterns out of paper, giving them meaning as amulets and symbols of life and harmony. During the workshop we will create our own patterns from a blank sheet of paper — each cut-out element will reflect our history, our trace, our presence. Children will join in the creative fun too, cutting out storks — a symbol of joy and rebirth.
This meeting is about saying “I am” — in the beauty that I create. Come along with your children, friends and parents to discover and create beauty together during the 13th Festival of Independent Belarusian Culture in Wrocław.
The other festival events will take place at various cultural venues across Wrocław – including the Grotowski Institute, the Eugeniusz Geppert Open Space (Otwarta Przestrzeń im. Gepperta), the Engraver’s House (Domek Miedziorytnika), Kino Popiół i Diament and Centrum na Przedmieściu.
Join us in celebrating independent Belarusian culture and discovering what lies behind the simple yet powerful statement: “I am!”.
