At the workshop, which will take place in our space this Friday, you will learn how to create the stone embroideries of Nova Kakhovka. The workshop will be preceded by an exhibition, which you can see on ul. Świdnicka (from 10.00, on your way to the Passage of Dialogue (Przejście Dialogu) if you come from the Hotel Monopol side).
👉 But let’s start at the beginning…
In the early 1950s, the Ukrainian artist Hryhorii Dovzhenko created cement and lime ornaments inspired by Cossack, Baroque and Eastern Ukrainian embroidery motifs. He used them to decorate the façades of houses in Nova Kakhovka, a town that came into being because of the construction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant and the North Crimean Canal. However, the expansion of infrastructure came at a heavy cost: the Dnipro burst its banks and its waters flooded the old town, destroying it completely.
For Dovzhenko, the embroideries he created on the façades were a foretaste of a new, safe reality. Today Nova Kakhovka is a recognised monument of architecture and urban planning.
At present, however, the town is under occupation, and its residents live in fear – but also in hope of a return to peaceful, “normal” times…
The workshop is organised by the Society for the Protection of the Cultural Heritage of the Temporarily Occupied Town of Nova Kakhovka
