We’re building the Locomotive! Contribute your object
Join in! Because, as we all know, that’s how it goes: clickety-clack, clickety-clack!
We invite you to contribute objects, appliances, equipment and all kinds of odds and ends, which will be built into a large-scale sculpture in the shape of a locomotive at the BWA Wrocław Główny gallery. The piece will be created as part of a participatory project by the artist Yael Vishnizki-Levi. We also encourage you to share stories about migration. The objects and stories will feature in the exhibition “Locomotive” (“Lokomotywa”), which will be on view until 27 March 2022.
The project is inspired by Julian Tuwim’s poem “Lokomotywa” (“The Locomotive”). Written in 1938, on the eve of the Second World War, the poem became part of the canon of Polish children’s literature, shaping ideas of movement, change, acceleration and both material and mental transformation.
Decades later, we look at “The Locomotive” as a new generation of adults. We ask what its famous verses tell us today about modernity and mobility, and how they relate to present-day social and environmental policies. The artist’s image of a temporary home on wheels is also an attempt to draw attention to the current situation of migrants and refugees, whose precarious and often dramatic circumstances go unnoticed or are ignored. They are denied basic human rights, such as access to food, clean water, a warm and safe place to stay, education and healthcare, and are left at the mercy of people of goodwill.
“Locomotive” is an attempt to find alternatives to familiar ways of organising life and work. We want to encourage everyone to talk about what might be useful and what needs to be taken into account on this journey.
What are we looking for?
We are particularly interested in things connected with physical or mental transformation, which tell personal stories of migration or other kinds of journey. Suitcases, bags, tents, storage containers, furniture – even pot plants, books, teaching aids, electrical appliances for heating food, tinned food, long-life dry goods, and any other conventional or unconventional objects that come to mind when you think of a journey or a temporary home.
After the exhibition closes, the donated objects may (with their donors’ consent) be passed on to centres for foreigners or to organisations supporting people experiencing homelessness.
As well as objects, we would love to hear or read your own or your family’s migration stories, provided we have your permission to include them in the programme of events accompanying the exhibition and in the online database on BWA Wrocław’s web platforms.
The deadline for submissions is 18 January 2022. Please submit via the form.

Yael Vishnizki-Levi.

Locomotive
A call for objects
We are building the Locomotive!
We invite you to contribute objects, appliances and different miscellaneous articles that will be constructed into a large-scale sculpture in the shape of a locomotive that will be built in the space of BWA Głowny gallery in Wrocław during the upcoming exhibition and participatory project ‘Lokomotive’, initiated by the artist Yael Vishnizki-Levi.
The project is inspired by Julian Tuwim’s famous educational poem ‘Lokomotywa’ (Locomotive) from 1938. It reflects upon notions of migration, transformation and journeys, both tangible and intangible. Through presenting the concept of a temporary home within the train, the artist wishes to shed light over the precarious situation of migrants and refugees that are often invisible to or unnoticed by the rest of society. Those for whom basic rights to nutritious food, clean water, warm and safe shelter as well as for education and healthcare have been taken away, leaving them subject to the mercy of society.
The temporary installation of the locomotive in the gallery attempts to find alternative possibilities for organizing both working, studying, and living spaces. We invite you to donate or loan items that are related to transformation (both physical and mental) as well as items that tell your own unique story of migration or journey, such as: suitcases, bags, tents, storage units, furnitures, and even house plants, books, learning equipment, electricity appliances, canned and dry food, and other conventional and nonconventional objects that come to your mind when you think about a journey in a locomotive or a temporary home. After the exhibition most of the items will be donated to centers for migrants and refugees around Poland.
In addition to the objects, we would love to hear or read your or your family’s migration stories and if given permission to include them as well in the educational program of the exhibition as well as in an online database part of BWA gallery online platforms.
We are waiting for photos and description of your objects until 18th of January 2022. BWA Wrocław Główny / online – fill the application form
