ALL OF US – A CONVERSATION ABOUT THE LIMITS OF LANGUAGE, HOW IT CHANGES AND WHAT SHAPES THOSE CHANGES

“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world,” wrote the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. If we cannot name something, we usually cannot think it either – and so it does not fit into our conception of the world.
Language users are pulled in various contradictory directions – for instance, curiosity about new words versus resistance to new versions of familiar terms, such as feminatives (feminine forms of job titles and activities). Yet the biggest linguistic upheaval of recent times has been caused by neutratives – formerly referred to simply as neuter forms – and the whole grammar of non-binary identity that goes with them.
And how do dictionaries, grammatical rules and actual usage fit into all this? We will discuss these questions with the visual artist Liliana Zeic (Piskorska) and Marzen Lizurej, a language expert and activist. The conversation will open Liliana Zeic (Piskorska)’s exhibition “My wszystkie.” (All of Us).
