Taming the Unknown: How to Talk Confidently About Disability / Dialogopolis

How can we speak correctly and mindfully about people with disabilities and the people around them – and why say “a person with a disability” rather than “a disabled person”, “a charge”, “a patient” or “a cripple”? How should we talk about the people who support people with disabilities? During the meeting we will learn the etiquette of interacting with people with disabilities. Is it all right to say “come on, let’s walk” to a wheelchair user? Can you say “see you!” to someone who is blind? How do you talk to people who do not speak and communicate through alternative forms of communication?
We will learn how to address a person with a disability directly and how to approach them when we want to help. We will discuss how people with disabilities are talked about in public. We will also hear about the experiences, reflections and views of people with disabilities.
